In civil law methods, contract and tort fall underneath a general law of obligations, whereas trusts law is handled beneath statutory regimes or worldwide conventions. International, constitutional and administrative law, criminal law, contract, tort, property law and trusts are considered the “traditional core subjects”, although there are many additional disciplines. Roman law was heavily influenced by Greek philosophy, however its detailed rules were developed by professional jurists and were extremely sophisticated. In medieval England, royal courts developed a body of precedent which later turned the common law. A Europe-wide Law Merchant was formed so that merchants might commerce with common standards of apply rather than with the various splintered aspects of local legal guidelines. The Law Merchant, a precursor to fashionable commercial law, emphasised the freedom to contract and alienability of property.
